Self-injurious Behavior in a Young Child with Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome
Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) is a rare inherited disorder caused by a deficiency of the enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase-1. Few reports on behavioral aspects especially self-injurious behavior in LNS patients are available. We report a case of LNS in an 8-year-old male child, who presented with characteristic self-injurious behavior.
Double-blind clinical trial of 5-hydroxytryptophan in a case of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) treatment of a single case of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome showing compulsive self-mutilation, athetoid movements, and characteristic clinical biochemical picture was studied on a double-blind basis. 5-HTP or placebo was administered for seven fortnightly treatment blocks. 5-HTP produced a significant reduction of athetoid movement and a sedative effect but did not improve t...
A preventive approach to oral self-mutilation in Lesch-Nyhan syndrome: a case report.
Lesch-Nyhan syndrome is a rare X-linked recessive disorder of purine metabolism, caused by complete absence of the enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase. Persons affected with this incurable disease are developmentally and physically delayed, and suffer from self-injurious behavior. The most typical feature results in partial or total destruction of perioral tissues. The purpos...
Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome: Disorder of Self-mutilating Behavior
Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS), a rare inborn error of metabolism, is characterized by self-injurious behavior, which results in partial or total destruction of oral and perioral tissues and/ or fingers. Persistent self-injurious behavior (biting the fingers, hands, lips, and cheeks; banging the head or limbs) is a hallmark of the disease. Prevention of self-mutilation raises significant difficulti...

A significant difference in activity was found between erythrocytes derived from normal controls (1.21±0.47 pmoles/hr per mg protein) and from 15 patients with the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (6.72 ±6.23 pmoles/hr per mg protein). However, no difference in activity was demonstrable in muscle or leukocytes derived from normal and Les...
